Population & Demographics

When the U. S. Census Bureau completed its analysis of the 2000 census data, the population of Buttonwillow was 1,266 and again designated Buttonwillow as the center of the state’s population. The center of the population has been around the Buttonwillow area since 1960. The California Land Surveyors Association in cooperation with the National Geodetic Survey, California Spatial Reference Center and California Department of Transportation has placed a commemorative monument at the Buttonwillow rest area along southbound Interstate 5 to recognize this designation.
